System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceView.SaveViewState Method

Saves the changes to the view state for the System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceView control since the time that the page was posted back to the server.

Syntax

protected virtual object SaveViewState ()

Returns

The object that contains the changes to the System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceView view state; otherwise, null, if there is no view state associated with the object.

Remarks

The SqlDataSourceView.SaveViewState method is primarily used by control developers.

View state is the accumulation of the values of the properties for a server control. These values are automatically placed in the System.Web.UI.Control.ViewState property for the server control, which is an instance of the System.Web.UI.StateBag class. The System.Web.UI.Control.ViewState value for the server control is then persisted to a string object after the save state stage of the server control life cycle.

When view state is saved, the string object that was persisted after the save state stage of the server control life cycle is returned to the client as a variable that is stored in an HTML Hidden element. When you author custom server controls, you can improve efficiency by overriding the SqlDataSourceView.SaveViewState method and modifying the ViewState property for your server control. For more information, see ASP.NET State Management Overview.
