I'll chat with Jim Lyles about it.

Personally, I use gnome terminal with Vera Sans Mono at 10 point, and
like the intercharacter spacing mostly as is, though I agree that the
monospace font seems to have a bit greater spacing than the Vera Sans
does (which isn't surprising given it is a monospace font).
