Vera is optimized for use anti-aliased.

Windows (by default) does not; you are staring at bitmaps.

You may prefer enabling ClearType on Windoze, or just using
Linux, where AA behavior is the default (btw, make sure you use
a Freetype with hinting turned on....).  Linux can do even
better than ClearType these days...
