I agree that the designers won't like it, but I disagree that
fonts need not be freely modified.
The middle ground is the license used by the Bitstream Vera fonts
(which are the only fonts I know of added to Xorg recently) - they
allow changes, but only if you rename your changed version so it's
clear it's not the work of their designers.
